Description

Spectacular 1882 Gold Dollar, PR65 Deep Cameo

1882 G$1 PR65 Deep Cameo ANACS. Of the 125 proof 1882 gold dollars struck, it is generally thought that somewhere between 45 and 55 pieces still exist. Gold specialist David Akers (1975) wrote of surviving specimens that " ... an abnormally high percentage ... are not particularly choice." The Deep Cameo Gem that we offer in this lot, therefore, is a very uncommon appearance. The overall apricot-gold surfaces have outstanding contrast between the frosted devices and the deeply mirrored fields, which appear black when viewed from above. The design elements are powerfully impressed, further enhancing the outstanding eye appeal of this piece. An impeccably preserved and handsome example. (Registry values: P2)
