Description
1882 Gold Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Ex: Alto, Bass
1882 G$1 PR66 Cameo PCGS. Ex: Bass Collection. Bright
apricot patina enriches this gorgeously preserved Premium Gem
proof. The strike is nearly unimprovable, and the devices have
impressive contrast with the mirrored fields. A tiny lintmark (as
made) on the lower portion of Liberty's cheek serves as a pedigree
identifier. The 1882 proof had a mintage of 125 pieces, although
there has been much confusion over the years between proofs and
prooflike business strikes. The obverse die for the present
specimen has a solitary striation (as made) that connects the bases
of ES in STATES. On the reverse, diagonal die polish marks fill the
upper loop of the second 8 in the date. The date has a slight but
noticeable upward slope.Ex: Alto Collection (Stack's, 12/1970), lot 48, which realized $290; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part III (Bowers and Merena, 5/2000), lot 70, where it realized $10,370; New York Signature Auction (Heritage, 11/2003), lot 7111.
