Description

1882 Gold Dollar, PR66 Deep Cameo
Amazing Contrast and Visual Appeal

1882 G$1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. Merely 5,000 business-strike gold dollars and 125 proofs were minted in 1882. The coins were issued more for numismatic purposes than for circulation, as gold dollars were unused in general commerce after 1879. Walter Breen asserts in his Proof Encyclopedia that none of the proofs were melted, and the population data at PCGS and NGC bear that out. The combined certification total is 110 submissions across all designations, including an unknown number of resubmissions. CoinFacts estimates that 80 1882 gold dollar proofs survive, while Bowers provides a range of 60 to 80 proofs extant. To be sure, survivors are rare in any grade, but especially at the Premium Gem level with Deep Cameo contrast. This amazing PR66 Deep Cameo gold dollar features jet-black fields against frosted, fully struck motifs. Rich yellow-gold surfaces are exceptionally preserved, and the visual appeal is outstanding. Population: 6 in 66 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (4/16).(Registry values: P2)
