Description

Pleasing PR63 1883 Gold Dollar

1883 G$1 PR63 Cameo NGC. The mintage for proof 1883 gold dollars was 207 pieces, but of that number only 100-125 examples are believed known today. There are many prooflike 1883 dollars that, in the past, have been confused with proofs. David Akers summed up the difference best: "true proofs can be identified by their characteristic orange-peel surface." This coin has that textured, crinkled appearance in the fields. The fields are also deeply mirrored and the devices display a significant overlay of mint frost that yield a strong cameo contrast. A few stray field marks account for the grade of this lovely gold dollar. Census: 3 in 63 Cameo, 26 finer (8/07).(Registry values: P2)
