Description

Orange-Peel PR63 Cameo 1883 Gold Dollar

1883 G$1 PR63 Cameo NGC. The prooflike nature of the business strike gold dollars produced in 1883 has confused collectors. True proofs feature a characteristic orange-peel surface and this example has that textured appearance in the deeply mirrored fields. The devices are boldly defined, lightly frosted, and display the noted Cameo contrast. Some light hairlines account for the grade, perhaps heavier on the reverse than the obverse. Census: 3 in 63 Cameo, 26 finer (12/07).(Registry values: P2)
