Description

1883 Gold Dollar, PR63 Cameo
Deeply Reflective Orange-Gold Surfaces

1883 G$1 PR63 Cameo PCGS. The 1883 proof gold dollar had a mintage of 207 proofs, but probably no more than 70 or so remain today. No firm diagnostics are known for this issue; as Breen states "business strikes (usually prooflike UNC.) and proofs both coming with traces of repunching and filling in 8's." That statement is suggestive that perhaps both proofs and business strikes were struck from the same dies. This piece displays deep, watery fields and there is a significant amount of orange-peel texture (not seen on business strikes). A few field marks are scattered over each side, as well as a few dark spots over the E in STATES and in the central portion of both the obverse and reverse.
