Description

1883 Gold Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Elusive Proof Issue

1883 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. Gold dollars were something of a fad in 1883 and the Philadelphia Mint struck a substantial proof mintage of 207 pieces to satisfy collector demand. Proof mintages grew much larger in succeeding years, but the extra demand came largely from non-numismatic sources, like the jewelry trade. The 1883 proof gold dollar is an elusive issue in today's market.

This impressive Premium Gem displays pinpoint definition on the richly frosted design elements, which contrast boldly with the deeply mirrored fields. The impeccably preserved yellow-gold surfaces show a few highlights of rose with outstanding eye appeal. Census: 9 in 66 Cameo, 6 finer (3/15).
