Description

Immaculately Preserved 1883 Gold Dollar
PR67 Cameo

1883 G$1 PR67 Cameo NGC. The mintage for proof gold dollars from this year was 207 pieces, but examples are not significantly more available than those from the previous year, when only 125 proofs were coined. While no hard and fast die characteristics are known for proofs versus first-strike coins intended for circulation, this piece shows the orange-peel surface always seen on proofs. Each side is wonderfully preserved and there are no reportable contact marks, nor would one expect to see any on a Superb Gem. The devices are noticeably frosted and provide strong contrast against the deeply reflective fields. One of the finest examples known of this late-date gold dollar. Census: 5 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (9/09).(Registry values: P2)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25ET, PCGS# 87633, Greysheet# 8188)
