1883 Gold Dollar, PR67 Cameo
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1883 G$1 PR67 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Only 207 proofs were made of the 1883 gold dollar, even though the business strikes saw a generous (for the time and series) production of 10,800 coins and were on an uptrend that would end the series in 1889. There has been confusion in the past over prooflike business strikes versus proofs, but this no-questions example shows the diagnostic die rust in the hair behind the ear that Breen mentions for B-1 in his Proof Encyclopedia. The reverse matches as well: "Normal 8's, first almost wholly below L; tops of wreath usually join; extra outlines to DOLLAR. R-5." Breen also mentions a different reverse die as B-2, R-6.
This Superb Gem proof offers deeply reflective fields that contrast against copious mint luster on the devices. The surfaces are near-perfect, as expected, with bright yellow-gold coloration. The strike is softly executed on the lower hair on the obverse. Population: 2 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P2)
