Description

Boldly Cameoed 1884 Proof Gold Dollar

1884 G$1 PR 66 Cameo NGC. Doubled Date. Breen-6107. The Mint's production of proof gold dollars ratcheted up to 1,006 pieces in 1884 from only 207 coins the previous year. Although the former mintage figure suggests that the 1884 is an easily obtainable issue, nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, we believe that no more than 50 examples of this issue are extant, the majority of which grade below the PR 66 level. The deep fields appear to swallow all light, a feature that presents an exquisite backdrop to the frosty devices. The color is orange-gold in shade and there are no mentionable marks. The date displays dramatic doubling under a loupe.
From the Violet Bancroft Collection.
