Description

1884 Gold Dollar, PR65 Deep Cameo
Blatant Contrast, Scarce Date

1884 G$1 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Business strikes are sometimes promoted as prooflike (often rightly so), and sometimes outright mistaken for proofs, but there is no mistaking this Gem Deep Cameo proof for anything other than what it is: one of the finest surviving examples of the 1884 gold dollar in this format. The motifs are light lemon-gold with a delicate layer of mint frosting. Contrast against the markedly reflective, jet-black fields is blatant and furthered by the virtual lack of contact. There is a U-shaped lintmark in the right obverse field (Mint-made), and 18 in the date is repunched, as always (although Breen contested otherwise). Population: 2 in 65 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (11/17).(Registry values: P1)
