    Description

    1884 Gold Dollar, PR67 Cameo
    Low Proof Survival

1884 G$1 PR67 Cameo NGC. Mint records indicate a substantial increase of proof gold dollar production beginning in 1884. According to production reports, an average of more than 1,000 proofs per year were coined from 1884 to 1888, and nearly 2,000 proofs were minted in 1889. Prior to 1884, proof mintages ranged from 20 coins to 349 coins, but usually under 100 pieces.

Why then, does the NGC Census Report show small populations for the last several years of the denomination? For example, that service has graded 61 proof 1884 gold dollars, from a mintage reported as 1,006 proofs. Similarly, NGC has certified 61 proof 1887 gold dollars from a mintage reported at 1,043 proofs. Compare those figures to the 1882 gold dollar, with 51 proofs certified from a mintage of only 125 coins. Clearly something changed, but what?

We know that this piece is a remarkable proof with extraordinary eye appeal. NGC has only certified two finer Cameo proofs (3/13). The surfaces are brilliant yellow, with peripheral rose toning, especially on the reverse. The devices are fully lustrous with excellent contrast. Census: 11 in 67 Cameo, 2 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EU, PCGS# 87634)
