    Description

Finest Known 1884 Gold Dollar, PR68 Cameo NGC

1884 G$1 PR68 Cameo NGC. Doubled Date. Breen-6107. The date displays dramatic doubling under a loupe. The mint's production of proof Gold Dollars dramatically rose to 1,006 pieces in 1884 from only 207 coins the previous year. Although the former mintage figure suggests that the 1884 is an easily obtainable issue, nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, we believe that no more than 50 examples of this issue are extant, the majority of which grade below the PR65 level.
This piece exhibits bright, yellow-gold luster on sparkling, deeply mirrored fields. Close examination reveals a mild "orange peel" texture and there are no post-striking distractions. The only possible identifier is a microscopic lintmark to the left of the base of the 1 in the date. This is the finest known piece certified by either NGC or PCGS (11/02). A very special offering for the gold enthusiast.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EU, PCGS# 87634)

    Weight: 1.70 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
