    Description

Cameoed 1885 Proof Gold Dollar, Choice Quality

1885 G$1 PR64 Cameo NGC. Perhaps 125 proof 1885 Gold Dollars are extant from an original mintage of 1,105 pieces. This is a respectable total for the series, but survivors are widely distributed throughout the grading scale (PR60 through PR67 at NGC and PCGS alone). This is the first near-Gem that we have handled since 1998, and, with richly colored, orange-gold surfaces, it is a simply beautiful coin to behold. The fields turn coal-black as the coin rotates away from the light, the devices exhibit thickly frosted luster at all angles. One or two wispy hairlines in the left obverse field are all that bar this desirable specimen from an even higher grade. (NGC ID# 25EV, PCGS# 87635)

    Weight: 1.70 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
