Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR64+ Deep Cameo
JD-1, Centered Date

1885 G$1 Centered Date, JD-1, R.4, PR64+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Later dates in the proof gold dollar series are unexpectedly scarce relative to their mintages. Many proofs were ordered by jewelers, who would turn them into love tokens, or otherwise eliminate them from possession by future collectors. The present Choice proof escaped that fate. The boldly struck devices are luminous, and the peach-gold fields are reflective. The cameo contrast is impressive, and hairlines (as opposed to mint-made die polish lines) are minimal. PCGS Population: 7 in 64 (1 in 64+) Deep Cameo, 13 finer (12/25). CAC: 5 in 64, 10 finer (12/25).
