Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Underrated Proof Date

1885 G$1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. JR-2, R.5. The proof 1885 gold dollar is rarer than implied by its mintage of 1,105 pieces. PCGS has only certified about 100 examples in all grades, and that figure is likely inflated by resubmissions over the past 35 years. The low survivor rate is attributed to jewelers of the day, who planed off the reverses of gold dollars and engraved them as love tokens. Since the denomination no longer circulated, jewelers purchased proofs directly from the Mint. This is a radiant peach-gold specimen with a frosty portrait and pleasing surfaces. Population: 7 in 64 Cameo, 9 finer (9/22).(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25EV, PCGS# 87635, Greysheet# 8194)

Weight: 1.70 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
