1885 Gold Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Starkly Contrasted
1885 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. The production total for proof 1885
gold dollars exceeded that of the silver dollar proof of the same
year (1,105 pieces to 930 pieces respectively), though Garrett and
Guth note that "A high mintage figure, and the fact that many
business-strike coins are exceedingly deceptive, makes the date
seem more common than it is." Gem-quality representatives
exhibiting a pleasing degree of cameo contrast make up a fraction
of the surviving population, and are highly sought-after. This
piece displays ample frost over the central devices, while the
fields showcase a profound depth of mirroring. Hairlines and
contact marks are virtually nonexistent, and boldly detailed design
