Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Bold Contrast, Sharp and Attractive

1885 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. JD-2, R.5. This sparkling 1885 Gem Cameo comes from a substantial proof mintage of 1,105 pieces, although most of the mintage went unsold and perhaps as few as 200 pieces were actually distributed to collectors. The Bowers reference estimates 140 to 180 pieces survive. Few of those can match the bold cameo contrast of this mirrored, medium-gold example. Heavy "Longacre doubling" on the legend corresponds to the John W. Dannreuther variety. A circular lint mark below T in UNITED and a few light die polish lines are Mint-related, and the sole visible interruptions of the glassy fields. The frosted devices are sharply struck on both sides, and the reverse die is rotated counterclockwise. Population: 4 in 65 Cameo, 4 finer (3/19).(Registry values: P1)
