    Description

    1885 Gold Dollar, PR65
    Excellent Eye Appeal

1885 G$1 PR65 PCGS. CAC. JD-1. Fully struck and flashy with attractive olive-gold and peach toning. Although Mint records indicate 1,105 proofs were delivered, most were purchased by jewelers who converted them to love tokens or other adornments. Jewelers selected proofs since gold dollars generally did not circulate after 1862. John Dannreuther estimates an equal number of proofs are extant from each die pair of the 1885 gold dollar, i.e., 200 to 300 pieces total. High grade proofs are rare. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 12 in 65, 16 finer. CAC: 1 in 65, 3 finer (5/19).
