Description

1885 Gold Dollar, Sparkling PR66 Cameo
Contrasted Orange-Gold Surfaces

1885 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. JD-1, R.4. The date sits centered above the bow and strong Longacre doubling exists at UNITED STATES OF AMERICA to confirm the JD-1 proof die pair. This is a boldly contrasted gold dollar with attractive reflectivity throughout the fields. A sharp proof strike renders the thickly frosted motifs, while the obverse legend was entered too deeply in the master die. LIBERTY is fully readable on the headdress and bold dentils sit inside the high rims. Confusion reigns when determining the number of proof die marriages and the actual number of 1885 proofs made. A reported mintage of 1,105 proofs may or may not be accurate, and some proofs were likely unsold. The largest proof delivery was in December 1885 -- most of those coins went to jewelers for the Christmas trade. John Dannreuther estimates 200 to 300 proofs survive, about evenly divided between the confirmed JD-1 and JD-2 varieties. This is a beautiful Premium Gem example that ranks highly among the known Cameo survivors. Census: 12 in 66 Cameo (1 in 66 ), 12 finer (6/23).(Registry values: P1)
