Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Contrasted Orange-Gold Surfaces

1885 G$1 PR66 Cameo PCGS. JD-2, R.5. JD-2 is distinguished from JD-1 by the presence of heavy Longacre doubling on STATES. The proof mintage of 1885 gold dollars is about one-tenth the number of circulation strikes manufactured that year (1,105 proofs vs. 11,156 coins for circulation). Writing in his recent reference on proof gold coinage, John Dannreuther estimates 200 to 300 proofs survive with the population split evenly between JD-1 and JD-2 representatives.

This Premium Gem is impressively smooth and virtually contact-free with rich orange-gold surfaces. Contrast between the frosted devices and reflective fields is eye-catching. Population: 5 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer in this contrast category (11/21).(Registry values: P1)
