Description

1885 Gold Dollar, PR66 Deep Cameo
Beautifully Contrasted

1885 G$1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. JD-1, R.4. The JD-1 dies are most easily differentiated from the JD-2 coins by the obverse border legend showing little if any discernible Longacre doubling. The same reverse die was used for both pairs. The 1885 is a fairly available coin in the proof gold series, with possibly 300 or so pieces known. However, few grade as fine as the current Premium Gem, which exhibits profound field-device contrast across deep, watery fields and sharp, frosty design elements. Each side is pristine, displaying lovely yellow-gold color unhindered by contact marks. Population: 4 in 66 Deep Cameo, 6 finer (4/24).(Registry values: P1)
