Superb 1885 Gold Dollar
PR67 Cameo
1885 G$1 PR67 Cameo NGC. The 1885 date is one of the more
available gold dollars in proof, if one believes the auction
records. Some caution should be used in evaluating the number of
auction offerings, as many deceptive, high-grade business strikes
are found on the market. The difficulty in distinguishing real
proofs from these high-end, regular-issue pieces probably resulted
in many errant listings in earlier catalogs.From a proof mintage of 1,105 pieces, this elegant coin ranks high in aesthetic appeal as well as technical grade. The deeply mirrored fields contrast boldly with the sharply detailed devices, producing the vivid Cameo effect. The rich, orange peel surfaces are diagnostic of true proofs. This specimen is nearly unimprovable. Census: 10 in 67 Cameo, 2 finer (11/08).(Registry values: P1)
