Description
Spectacular 1885 Gold Dollar, PR68 Cameo
1885 G$1 PR68 Cameo NGC. Garrett and Guth (2006) write of the 1885 proof gold dollar: "A few truly superb examples of this date have been graded by the services, the finest being an NGC PF-68 coin." Though it is impossible to determine which coin the two writers had in mind, the phrase "truly superb" seems appropriate on viewing this delightful specimen. The fathomless mirrors appear jet-black from a distance, though closer inspection reveals vivid yellow-gold color with a hint of carrot color at the margins. The boldly impressed devices exhibit light frost as well, which contributes to the coin's striking contrast. A slight orange-peel effect on the obverse only confirms this coin's status as a proof, and while a handful of lint marks are present in the fields, their impact on the coin's visual appeal is trivial at worst. A breathtaking example, one practically at the pinnacle of preservation, a true rarity that emerges from the comparatively common status of the issue.
