    Description

1885 G$1 PR 66 PCGS. Proof 1885 gold dollars were struck from four different die combinations and quite a few pieces (relatively speaking) are extant today, with the most reasonable estimate of survivors being somewhere in the neighborhood of 125 pieces. Of course, Gems are always difficult, and of the remaining PR 66s it is difficult to imagine a more perfectly preserved and attractive example. The fields show unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity and the devices are heavily frosted, providing a pronounced cameo appearance on each side (although not labeled as such on the insert). Lint marks are common on this and other dates from the 1880s (and are present on this piece also). They were caused by wiping the dies with a cloth, stray pieces of lint would then fall onto the dies and be struck into the coin. Such lint marks could be used as pedigree identifiers on this coin if one were so inclined. Population: 21 in 66, 3 finer. (NGC ID# 25EV, PCGS# 7635)

    Weight: 1.67 grams
