Description

Glittering Gem Cameo Proof
1886 Gold Dollar

1886 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. Although the Garrett and Guth gold Encyclopedia makes only oblique reference to it, for details see the writeup in the Breen Proof Encyclopedia that many 1886 gold dollars show "evidence .. that coins from this period were handled very carelessly by Mint employees." Due to the large mintage exceeding 1,000 pieces, however, today proof 1886 gold dollars are popular type coins.
This Gem--a fortunate exception that has been carefully preserved--glitters with all the eye appeal expected of a late-date proof gold dollar issue. The fields are bright yellow-gold and delightfully reflective with moderate orange-peel effect, a great counterpoint to the lightly frosted and razor-sharp devices. Carefully preserved and crisply contrasted, a coin to remember. Population: 5 in 65 Cameo, 4 finer (8/10).
