    Description

    1887 Gold Dollar, PR65 Cameo
    Scarcer JD-2 Variety

1887 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. A fairly generous mintage of 1,043 proof gold dollars was accomplished in 1887 and John Dannreuther has identified two die varieties for the date. This coin represents the scarcer JD-2 variety, with a new obverse die that shows a dot behind the eye and an irregular raised area on the chin (this obverse is also used on the JD-1 variety). The reverse die has a low date that slants slightly down from left to right. The JD-2 dies were also used to strike business strikes. The surviving population for JD-2 is estimated at 30-50 examples in all grades.

The present coin is a delightful Gem proof, with razor-sharp definition on all design elements and deeply mirrored fields that contrast boldly with the frosty devices. The Lemon-yellow surfaces are well-preserved and appealing. Population: 8 in 65 Cameo, 8 finer. CAC: 6 in 65, 4 finer (12/18).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EX, PCGS# 87637)

    Weight: 1.70 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
