Description
Gem Proof 1888 Gold Dollar
Interesting Obverse Die Anomaly
1888 G$1 PR65 PCGS Secure. According to the Breen Proof
Encyclopedia, the 1888 proof gold dollars are seen with ERT in
LIBERTY normal or weak, indicating at least two different obverses
for the coinage of 957 pieces. This piece shows a clear LIB, a
faint E, and most of RT absent, while only the right half of Y is
visible. Some minor extra outlines around some of the letters in
DOLLAR are also as noted in the Breen reference. This Gem proof is
medium yellow-gold with considerable contrast, although
undesignated as Cameo. Light field chatter on each side prevents an
even finer grade but appears only under a loupe. Population: 30 in
65, 10 finer (6/12).(Registry values: P1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25EY, PCGS# 7638, Greysheet# 8202)
Weight: 1.67 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
