Description

1888 Gold Dollar, PR66
Rich Peach Patina

1888 G$1 PR66 PCGS. JD-1, High R.4. Proof mintages for the final six years of the Liberty gold dollar series exceeded 1,000 pieces. But those figures are misleading, since most proofs were ordered by jewelers, who fashioned them into love tokens or other adornments. The proof 1888 is surprisingly scarce, and most examples are in PR62 to PR66 grades. The present orange-gold specimen is a fully struck and prominently mirrored Premium Gem. The surfaces appear devoid of contact, though we note a few minute mint-made lint marks, along with a drop of residue near the E in STATES. Population: 7 in 66, 4 finer (4/19).(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25EY, PCGS# 7638, Greysheet# 8202)

Weight: 1.67 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
