Superb Proof 1888 Gold Dollar
1888 PR 66 PCGS. Most likely a substantial number of proofs were melted from the mintage of 1,079 pieces. Survivors range from severely mishandled to Proof-67. This piece is obviously at the higher end of the known survivors. The only surface flaws we can see on this lovely proof are a few small planchet flakes and several lint marks--both of which are mint caused. Deeply mirrored but there is little or no contrasting mint frost on the devices. Population: 2 in 66, only 3 finer (7/96).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25EY, PCGS# 7638, GSID# 8202)
