Description

1889 Gold Dollar, PR64 CAC
Rare JD-2, Low Date Variety

1889 G$1 Low Date, JD-2, R.6, PR64 PCGS. CAC. The final-year proof Liberty gold dollar is much scarcer than implied by its mintage of 1,779 pieces, because a majority were purchased by non-numismatists. Among those specimens that have survived, a majority are JD-1, identified by a die-doubled wreath ribbon. JD-2 shows a die crack on the reverse near 12 o'clock. This splendid proof type coin has frosty devices and glittering fields. Distractions are absent, and only delicate obverse field hairlines deny a higher assessment.
