Flashy Cameo Gem Proof 1889 Gold Dollar

1889 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. 1889 is a watershed year in U.S. numismatics. Not only did the three cent nickel series terminate, but both the one dollar and three dollar gold series ended as well. In the case of the one dollar gold, the business strike mintage swelled to 28,950 coins in 1889, from mintages that were typically only in the four digits for much of the 1870s and 1880s. The proof mintage was also the largest by far in the entire series, at almost 1,800 coins. But time and attrition have considerably thinned the ranks of those survivors, and today a Gem 1889 proof dollar is a rare item indeed. PCGS has certified only 16 Gem coins within all contrast levels, with 13 finer.
The present example appears to border on a Deep Cameo designation. The coin hails from late in the proof mintage, as die polishing has effaced most of ERT in LIBERTY (Breen's Proof Encyclopedia notes that the obverse was reused from the 1888 proofs). While most of the devices are covered in thick mint frost and the fields are nicely reflective, a small mirrored area is noted below Liberty's ear and downward onto her neck. Tiny reverse die cracks are noted between each half of the wreath exterior and the denticles. None of those mostly microscopic mint-caused flaws, however, detract in any way from the significant flash and huge eye appeal of this lovely Gem Cameo proof, an ideal selection for a last-year type set. Population: 3 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (6/07).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EZ, PCGS# 87639)
