Description

1840 B-1 Large Berries Half Cent
PR63 Brown

From the Clapp and Eliasberg Collections

1840 1/2 C Original, B-1, R.5, PR63 Brown PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. The present cataloger described this coin nearly 30 years ago for the 1996 Eliasberg auction, and wrote at the time that perhaps 19 exist. That was prior to the important publication of Rick Coleman's research on the proof half cents. Today, the R.5 rating suggests a population between 31 and 75 pieces, although it is likely that the present variety falls into the rarest third of that range. This example is sharply detailed with gold, emerald, violet, and blue toning. Gold toning is dominant on the obverse and emerald is featured on the reverse. The Eliasberg Catalog included an earlier provenance to the September 1901 Lyman H. Low auction of the Jacob G. Morris Collection. The only 1840 half cent in that collection was cataloged as "1840 Fine, extremely rare." However, the price realized ($36.50) was greater than an 1841 proof half cent in the same auction. Housed in a green label holder.
