1841 Original Proof Half Cent

1841 Original PR 61 Brown PCGS. An original striking as evidenced by the large berries on the reverse. Originals are considered R.6 and are among the most desirable of all proof half-cents. Some two dozen specimens are believed to exist, perhaps six of these are impounded in museums with another four or five showing signs of circulation. This piece has pinpoint striking details and smooth, glassy-mirrored fields that are covered with lovely blue-green and brown patina. An important, identifying scratch is located on the reverse above the HA of HALF.
Alleged to be from the Nate Smith Collection (Stack's, 3/73), lot 69, but either this is not the Smith coin or a different photograph was used for this lot, as the identifying spots and scratch on this coin do not show on the photograph in the Stack's catalog.
