Description

Select 1841 Second Restrike Proof 64

1841 Second Restrike PR 64 Brown. B-3, Low R.7. A radiant example of this very rare and desirable proof-only date. The fields retain wisps of the original red near the devices, while most of the coin is dark chocolate-brown. The fields are virtually free of marks, save for a few stray hairlines hidden by the color. Curiously, this obverse die cracked from the rim near the second star, up through the third to sixth stars, then out the rim over star seven. Said crack appears during the initial after-hours production by chief coiner George Eckfeldt and his night watchman son Theodore, of the "originals," and grows more heavy through the production of "first restrikes" then "second restrikes" as offered here. Rampant collector demand for scarce and otherwise unavailable half cents was satisfied through certain illegal production runs of date sets of these proof half cents, believed to have been struck by George Eckfeldt with the assistance of his son Theodore (See Walter Breen'sEncyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857).There is a small lump on the edge above star eight, where the collar began to fail. If one must find fault, part of the delicate knife rim has been filed down along the top of the reverse, this is often encountered as even careful handling would subject the knife rim to tiny bumps, and a brief brush with an emery board would eliminate the knife rim, and the offending bumps.
