Description

1842 Original Half Cent, B-1, PR64 Brown
One of the Scarcer Original Proofs

1842 1/2 C Original, B-1, R.6, PR64 Brown NGC. CAC. Steel-blue, sky-blue, mustard, and sage collude to create wonderful toning on the surfaces of this Proof half cent. Strike is exquisite, and a couple of errant nicks on and below the A in HALF are the only abrasions of note. This is one of the scarcer issues of Original proof half cents. Breen records 14 and PCGS estimates 12 to 15. Coleman lists 18 examples and the Bowers-Whitman Guide Book estimates 15 to 20. PCGS has only certified six Brown examples, with NGC adding just four more (7/25). This example does not appear to match any of the coins listed in Richard Coleman's September 2003 census in Penny-Wise.(Registry values: P5)
