Description

1842 B-1 Half Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
Large Berries Original

1842 1/2 C Original PR64 Red and Brown NGC. B-1, High R.6. When we offered this piece in 2012, it was the first of three lots that were part of the Oscar Schilke-Paul Kagin 1842 proof set. The other two lots were the Seated half dollar, and the Seated dollar. The proof set case was sold with the silver dollar. Today, this half cent is offered as a stand-alone piece.

This variety has the Large Berries reverse of all Original Braided Hair half cents. Splashes of pale blue toning appear on virtually full red surfaces with a few minuscule spots on each side. The surfaces offer nicely mirrored fields with sharply defined, satin devices, yielding light cameo contrast especially evident on the obverse. The 1842 Original half cent is one of the scarcest of the series, with just over a dozen pieces known. This example was mentioned in Walter Breen's Census, when he wrote: "One of these is reportedly in a proof set in the Oscar G. Schilke estate." Breen was obviously unaware that Schilke had sold the set to Kagin.

Combined, PCGS and NGC have certified one in PR55; one in PR60 Brown; one in PR62 Red and Brown; four in PR64 Brown; one in PR64 Red and Brown (the present piece); two in PR65 Brown; one in PR65 Red; and one in PR66 Brown (7/19). Our EAC grade PR64.
Ex: Central States Signature (4/2012), lot 5001, which realized $27,600. Earlier from the Oscar Schilke-Paul Kagin 1842 proof set.
