Description

1844 Original Half Cent, PR63 Red and Brown
B-1, Ex: Mills, Clapp, Eliasberg

1844 1/2 C Original, B-1, R.5, PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. Steel-blue and rose obverse toning is highlighted with original Mint Red around Liberty. On the reverse, blue and purple dominate, with hints of forest-green. Abrasions are nearly nonexistent, suggesting a higher grade. The strike is intricate, with all details fully impressed. The Generation 3.1 green label holder notes the Eliasberg pedigree.

Large Berries in the wreath quickly identify this 1844 half cent as an original. The rating of R.5 is a significant decrease from the 15 surviving examples estimated in the Eliasberg catalog, and Richard Coleman lists 35 examples across all three types in his 2003 census in Penny-Wise. Either way, conditional rarity is even more certain, as among Red and Brown examples, PCGS has only certified one other PR63 example, with 3 finer, and NGC lists just one finer example. At the Red designation, the issue is nearly unobtainable, with two certifications at PCGS and just a single example at NGC. All of these factors make this among the finest available 1844 Original half cents with this designation.
