Possible Finest Known 1844 Second Restrike Proof Half Cent
1844 Restrike PR 66 Red and Brown NGC. Second Restrike. Again, the Second Restrike coins are characterized by small berries on the reverse wreath and die file marks over RICA. A High R.6 coin, only two dozen or so pieces are believed extant today. This is undoubtedly one of the finest, if not the finest piece known. It is certainly the finest Red and Brown coin certified by either of the major services (6/96). Most of the original orange-red color is still intact on the obverse with only slight muting on that side. The reverse is similar but a bit deeper in hue. The surfaces appear flawless and show no carbon spots to the unaided eye.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26ZB, PCGS# 1276, GSID# 610)
