Description

1846 Original B-1 Half Cent
PR65 Red and Brown; Tied Finest Certified

1846 1/2 C Original, B-1, Low R.6, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. Mint Red predominates throughout the obverse, with hints of steel-blue and rose as well as additional hues by the date providing a stunning patina. The reverse increases the rose and steel-blue tones, and adds hints of electric blue and mustard near the top. As is the norm on half cents of this caliber, strike is nearly perfect and abrasions are nowhere to be found. The 1846 Original is the most available of the three formats for the proofs of this year, although as with all proof-only half cents, available is a relative term - there are still only an estimated 25 to 30 examples known. Of this small surviving population, it is certainly one of the finest. Neither PCGS nor NGC have certified any Red examples, and this is the sole finest at NGC, with one certification in an equivalent grade at PCGS.
