Small Date 1849 First Restrike Half Cent--Ex: Benson, Eliasberg
1849 Small Date, First Restrike PR 66 Brown NGC. Characterized as a first restrike by the doubled T in CENT, and a very rare issue in any grade. This is the only PR or MS 66 certified of this date, and thus is the finest known. Emerald-green patina is intermixed on each side with small portions of cherry-red giving the coin a pleasing iridescent quality. The mirrored fields are bright and little diminished by the subdued colors present over each side. The 1849 has long been considered the rarest of all the proof half cents from the 1840s.
