Description

1850 PR 64 Red and Brown NGC. While some proof half cents and cents from the 1830s through the 1850s are less than convincing to the collector who is accustomed to seeing modern proof coinage, this coin "carries its own credentials." The fields are deeply mirrored on both sides and the rims are wide and fully squared off. Breen is of the opinion that only a dozen or so 1850 proofs may exist today from an unknown, but obviously very small, mintage. Much of the original mint red color is still intact and is intermixed with a slight browning in the fields and more exposed areas of the coin. There are a couple of larger carbon spots on the left side of the date which serve as identifiers for pedigree purposes, and also explain the grade of this otherwise gem proof. Very rare and of interest to both copper enthusiasts as well as collectors of 19th century proof type.
