1852 Second Restrike Half Cent--Very Scarce

1852 Restrike PR 62 Brown PCGS. Second Restrike. A Rarity 7 coin and obviously very elusive, this is the only Second Restrike we have offered in at least six years. All proofs from this year have small berries, the Second Restrikes are distinguished by die file marks over RICA. These are very faint, however, and at first glance they are not apparent, leading one to hope that perhaps this is a theoretically possible but unknown original proof from 1852. Deep, chocolate-brown patina covers each side of this fully struck proof. Identifiable by a small planchet depression at 3 o'clock on the obverse rim.
Like the 1841 Original several lots above, this piece is also alleged to be from the Nate Smith Collection (Stack's, 3/73), lot 77 and a flip accompanies. However, the coin does not match the photograph in the Stack's catalog, and it is attributed there as a First Restrike.
