    Description

    1854 Proof Half Cent

1854 PR 63 Brown NGC. B-2. Unlike other dates in the half cent series, there were no restrikes for 1854. All proofs show a diagnostic rust pit on the top of the I in UNITED, as does this piece. The proofs of this date are considered a Low R.6 with Breen believing a few dozen pieces may still exist today. The fields are non-reflective. Both sides are similarly toned in deep olive-brown shades with some subtle red highlights in the most protected areas.
Ex: Adolph Friedman Collection (Numismatic Gallery, 8/1946) lot 1404. Accompanied by the original Stirling Collection pedigree page.
