Description

Richly Colored and Impressive Gem Proof 1855 Half Cent

1855 PR 65 Brown NGC. Eliasberg. B-1, C-1, R.5 as a proof. A marvelous, deeply mirrored proof. The "brown" designation does not do the coin justice as the bright fields reflect back to the viewer subtle yet dramatic shadings of rose, sea-green, and citrine. Probably three dozen or so proofs are known of this date, most of which are not gems. Identifiable as the Eliasberg specimen by several obverse carbon spots, most notably one directly in front of the eye of Liberty, another above the hairline and between stars 7 and 8, and a third by star 12.
Some confusion exists about the early pedigree of this coin, as mentioned in the Eliasberg catalog. The Clapp notebook recorded two proof 1855 half cents. One was from the Wetmore Sale (S.H. & H. Chapman, 6/06), and the other from the Blair Collection (Charles Steigerwalt, 10/96). Clapp estate, 1942, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Collection (B&M, 5/96), lot 479.
