Description

1855 C-1, B-1 Half Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
From the Missouri Cabinet

1855 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.5 (as a Proof) PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. Ex: Missouri Cabinet Collection. Faded mint red with rich steel-blue toning in the left obverse field and over much of the reverse on this highly appealing proof half cent. All of the details are bold and the fields exhibit mild reflectivity. A lint mark is noted below Star 4 and two lightly abraded spots are evident at stars 7 and 8. This is unquestionably a proof strike, one of about 30 such pieces that survive today. There are similarities to the plate in the 1975 Stack's catalog, but a match is inconclusive, in our opinion. Our EAC grade PR63. Population: 3 in 64 Red and Brown, 1 in 64 Red, 6 numerically finer (12/17).
Ex: R. Tettenhorst; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Missouri Cabinet (Goldberg Coins, 1/2014), lot 217. Said to be from the James B. Wilson Sale (Thomas L. Elder, 10/1908), lot 1138; Hillyer Ryder; Wayte Raymond (MBS, 11/1945), lot 62; Joseph H. Spray Collection (Stack's, 4/1975), lot 13.
