Finest Certified 1856 Proof Half Cent
1856 PR 66 Red and Brown NGC. B-3, R.4 as a proof. This variety is characterized by doubling on the word CENT. It is one of the more common half cent proofs, if any of them can be called common, but still of great rarity and importance to the 19th century proof specialist. In all 200 pieces were struck with Breen estimating that some 60 or so may actually survive in collector's hands. Those estimates do not jibe with the number of pieces seen at PCGS and NGC, as only 16 have been certified in all grades and colors, with this being the finest certified by either of the major services (6/96). This is a lovely, deeply mirrored proof that shows bright steel-blue color intermixed with original red over both sides. We see no contact marks and only a couple of non-distracting specks of carbon on the obverse.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26ZX, PCGS# 1330, GSID# 688)
