Description

Lovely 1856 Proof Half-Cent

1856 PR 65 Red and Brown PCGS. B-1, R.5 as a proof. This variety is characterized by doubling on the word CENT. It is one of the more common half cent proofs, if any of them can be called common, but still of great rarity and importance to the 19th century proof specialist. In all 200 pieces were struck with Breen estimating that some 60 or so may actually survive in collector's hands. Those estimates do not jibe with the number of pieces seen at PCGS and NGC, as only 23 have been certified in all grades and colors, with this being tied with one other as the finest certified by PCGS (10/97). This is a lovely, razor sharp proof that shows slightly subdued mirrors and rich, brick-red color over the obverse, the reverse is deeper in tone with medium brown and blue color. We see essentially no contact marks and only a few of non-distracting specks of carbon on the obverse.
Ex: Harlan P. Smith Collection (S.H. and Henry Chapman, 5/1906); J.M. Clapp (Clapp Estate, 1942); Eliasberg (Bowers & Merena, 5/96), lot 480.
