Description

Very Rare Proof 1857 Half Cent

1857 PR 64 Red and Brown NGC. According to Breen, proof half cents dated 1857 are "extremely rare." Allegedly, 266 proofs were struck, but many were later melted or lost to circulation. The population figures of both services tend to bear this out as a total of 51 pieces have been graded in all colors combined (11/98). This is tied with 3 others as the finest thus far graded by NGC. Both sides exhibit completely different toning schemes; the obverse is predominately sea-green with golden-red accents, the reverse is magenta and purple with an olive-green color in the field. A very colorful example of this rare issue.
