1907 PR62 High Relief Twenty, Wire Rim
    Sharpest Striking Quality

1907 $20 High Relief PR62 NGC. While the characteristics of proof High Reliefs are generally well known to advanced students of this series, they may bear repeating here to refresh the memory of those who do not see these special coins on a regular basis. Taken from Walter Breen's 1988 Encyclopedia, the most widely accepted diagnostics for proof strikings for the High Relief include:

    1. Sharp inner border on both sides.
    2. All berries in the obverse olive branch are well rounded.
    3. The Capitol building on the obverse is fully brought up with distinct pillars.
    4. The eagle's tail feathers are distinct all the way up to the right reverse border.
    5. The edge letters are bolder than those seen on business strikes, and there are horizontal striations between them.
    6. No more than a trace of a wire rim is evident on either side.

An unknown (but small) number of proof High Relief twenties were struck in 1907, and these coins are always the subject of intense interest from collectors when one enters the marketplace. This is an attractive example that shows the exceptionally crisp definition one expects of a proof striking. The bright and satiny surfaces show a slightly muted overlay of green-gold patina. The only marks of note are a squiggly lintmark from the eagle's wing to the rim under the U of UNITED, and a shallow scratch from the obverse rim at 10 o'clock to the base of Liberty's torch.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2006), lot 3497, where it brought $20,125.

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
